The Conference Theme

It has been the practice of Globelics to encourage researchers to present papers on issues of relevance for society, policy makers and management in the host country. Keeping this practice in mind the theme of GLOBELICS 2006 has been finalized as follows.

The remarkable economic performance of India during the last two decades has attracted world attention and the analysts are highly optimistic on India’s future growth. Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of India’s performance has been its emergence as a dominant player in some of the knowledge intensive and highly competitive sectors like ICT software and services, Drugs and Pharmaceuticals, automobiles, auto components and others. Of late the country is also the recipient of a number of R&D outsourcing deals. GLOBELICS 2006 is expected to highlight the underlying factors in India’s success to draw lessons for less developed countries and identify plausible areas of mutually beneficial co-operation. At the same time, the governments and industries in India can learn from others’ experience to address the challenges of heightened international competition. GLOBELICS 2006 will provide an opportunity for the India’s corporate sector to interact with leading economists and management professionals.

Learning from others is especially important because India’s performance falls short of her potential especially in the traditional sectors of the economy including agriculture. India shares with the other developing countries the problems of poverty, unemployment, rural urban divides and inequality. This in turn hampers the growth of domestic markets and slows down a broad-based development process. To avoid a heavily lop-sided development, the public and private agents need to find ways to mobilize innovation and knowledge in the traditional sectors of the economy, including agriculture, to enhance their competitiveness and to address the issues of poverty, unemployment and inequality. This implies a combination of R&D-investments, investments in human resources and organizational change, including linking the firms to knowledge intensive networks and the academia.

The outcomes of multilateral trade liberalization of the past decade have induced developing countries to search for new trade alignments and also to foster closer technological alliances with other developing countries. Some of the Southern countries have also emerged as the home of third world multinationals. Given the capabilities built up over the years by some of the developing countries like Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) and others, there is scope for fostering technological partnerships among these countries for their own benefit and harnessing their capabilities to hasten the catching up by less developed countries. In this context, GLOBELICS 2006 will explore possibilities of building new technological bridges in South-South cooperation, especially in the context of the BRICS-countries. Comparative analysis of the experience of China and India in learning, innovation and competence building will be a special highlight of GLOBELICS 2006.
